The Costs of a Bail Bond
What is the cost of posting bail at a Virginia jail?
When the Courts a deciding bail and the amount it will be, they are guided by the following criteria:
- The defendant’s work history
- Community ties
- Residency
- Any criminal history.
The Code of Virginia:
1. A licensed bail bondsman shall not charge a bail bond premium less than 10 percent or more than 15 percent of the amount of the bond set by DCJS (Virginia Department of Criminal Justices Services). A licensed bail bondsman shall not loan money with interest for the purpose of helping another obtain a bail bond.
The bail charge, is a non-refundable percentage of the total amount of the bail. For example, if the bail amount is $8,000, the bail bond cost will be $800. See Virginia State Code of Law for Bondsmen.
2. An administrative fee may be charged by a bail bondsman, not to exceed reasonable costs. Reasonable costs may include, but are not limited to, travel, court time, recovery fees, phone expenses, administrative overhead and postage.
